What is JourneyMap?

JourneyMap is the long-running mapping mod for Forge, NeoForge, and Fabric. It records terrain as you explore into a persistent map viewable three ways: a corner minimap, a full-screen map (J key), and an optional web map served to your browser.

Waypoints, death markers, mob radar, and per-dimension maps come standard, and the map data lives client-side, so your exploration history follows you across servers.

Maps, Waypoints, and Radar

  • Minimap presets: two configurable presets toggle with a key — a common setup is a small round map for travel and a large square one for building.
  • Waypoints: create with B, or automatically on death. Waypoints beam in-world, color-code, and filter per dimension; the manager handles bulk edits.
  • Full-screen map: zoom, pan, create waypoints by right-click, and switch layers (day, night, topo, biome, caves).
  • Cave mapping: underground view activates automatically below ground, slicing by Y level.
  • Radar: hostile, passive, and player icons with per-type toggles (servers can restrict radar).
  • Web map: enable in options to browse your world live from another monitor at localhost.

Tip: Waypoint teleport buttons appear when the server grants permission (ops or single-player cheats). Packs often bind "create waypoint" and "toggle minimap" — check Controls once to avoid conflicts.

JourneyMap FAQ

How do I make a waypoint in JourneyMap?

Press B where you stand, or right-click a spot on the full-screen map (J). Death waypoints appear automatically and clear once revisited by default.

JourneyMap or Xaero's: which map mod is better?

JourneyMap offers the web map and heavyweight feature set; Xaero's is lighter with a distinctive fair-play mode. It comes down to pack default and taste; running both duplicates HUDs.

Does JourneyMap map caves?

Yes, cave mode maps underground in Y-level slices whenever you are below the surface, including the Nether and modded cave dimensions.
