What is Iron Chests?

Iron Chests is one of the oldest storage mods still shipping, dating back to the earliest Forge era and maintained today for Forge and NeoForge. The pitch has never changed: chests made of progressively better metals hold progressively more items in a single block, with in-place upgrade items so you never dump and rebuild.

For players who want more slots without learning a storage system, this is still the answer.

Chest Tiers and Upgrades

Gold81mid-tier standard
Diamond108the workhorse
Crystal108transparent — contents render inside

Upgrade items (Iron-to-Gold, Gold-to-Diamond, and so on) right-click onto a placed chest, converting it instantly with contents intact. The mod also ships trapped variants of each tier for redstone builds, and a companion Iron Shulker Boxes mod covers portable storage in the same style.

Iron Chests FAQ

How do I upgrade a chest in Iron Chests?

Craft the matching upgrade item (for example Diamond Chest Upgrade) and right-click it on the placed chest. Items stay inside; no breaking required.

What is special about the Crystal Chest?

It is diamond-tier capacity with transparent walls: the first few item types inside render visibly through the glass, which makes it a favorite for display storage.

Is Iron Chests on Fabric?

The mainline mod targets Forge and NeoForge. Fabric equivalents exist from other authors (search for "iron chests" ports on Modrinth) with matching tier layouts.
