What is AppleSkin?
AppleSkin by squeek502 makes Minecraft's hidden food math visible. Vanilla tracks saturation and exhaustion behind the hunger bar without ever showing them; AppleSkin surfaces both, plus per-food tooltips showing exactly how many haunches and how much saturation every item restores.
It is client-safe on Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge, tiny, and present in essentially every modpack.
What It Shows
- Food tooltips: hunger and saturation values for every edible item, vanilla and modded.
- Hover preview: holding food overlays the hunger bar with the exact restoration you would get from eating it now.
- Saturation overlay: a subtle outline over the hunger bar shows current saturation level, so you know how long the bar will hold.
- Exhaustion tint: the drain progress toward losing your next saturation point renders as an underlay.
- Health-restore preview where regeneration from eating is predictable.
In practice it teaches you to eat high-saturation foods like steak, golden carrots, and hearty modded meals before mining trips, then top off with cheap food only when the reserve runs dry. The overlay teaches vanilla's food strategy passively within an hour of play.
AppleSkin FAQ
What is saturation in Minecraft?
A hidden reserve drained before visible hunger. High-saturation foods keep the hunger bar full far longer; AppleSkin displays the reserve as an overlay so the mechanic stops being invisible.
Does AppleSkin work server-side or client-side?
It works client-only with estimated values; installing it on the server too syncs exact data. Most packs include it on both sides.
Does AppleSkin change game balance?
No. It is purely informational; food values stay untouched.
