What is Sodium?
Sodium by CaffeineMC rewrites Minecraft's chunk rendering engine with modern OpenGL techniques, and the result is the single largest FPS gain available from any mod — commonly two to four times vanilla framerates, with far less micro-stutter. It began as the flagship Fabric performance mod and now ships official NeoForge builds as well.
Sodium changes no gameplay whatsoever: it is a pure client-side renderer swap, which is why it anchors nearly every performance modpack and client setup.
Setup and Companion Mods
Install Sodium for your loader and version, and it works immediately. Its video settings page replaces vanilla's with more granular control, from per-element graphics quality to chunk update behavior and performance toggles.
Sodium deliberately focuses on rendering only. The CaffeineMC ecosystem and friends cover the rest:
- Lithium – game logic optimization (server and client).
- Iris – shader support on top of Sodium.
- Sodium Extra – an addon restoring OptiFine-style toggles for animations, particles, and fog.

Is Sodium better than OptiFine?
For framerate, yes, usually by a wide margin, and it breaks far fewer mods. OptiFine bundles features that Sodium leaves to companion mods — Iris for shaders, Sodium Extra for the video toggles, and Continuity for connected textures.
Does Sodium work on Forge?
Official builds target Fabric and NeoForge. Classic Forge users on 1.20.1 and earlier historically used the Embeddium port instead.
Does Sodium work with shaders?
Yes, through Iris Shaders, which is built to pair with Sodium and loads OptiFine-format shader packs.
