What is Naturalist?
Naturalist by Starfish Studios adds around fifty animals with dozens of variants — bears, snakes, alligators, giraffes, vultures, catfish, fireflies, butterflies, snails — behaving like wildlife rather than walking loot tables. Predators genuinely hunt their prey here. Snakes rattle a warning before striking and bears go after beehives, while the ambient species fill each biome out until it feels like a habitat.
It runs on Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge with a strong vanilla-adjacent art style.
Ecosystem Behavior
- Food chains: predators such as bears, big cats, and birds of prey actively hunt smaller species; prey-and-scavenger loops play out without player involvement.
- Warning systems: rattlesnakes rattle before striking, bears rear up before charging — aggression telegraphs like real wildlife documentaries.
- Ambient life: fireflies at dusk and butterflies over the flower fields, snails emerging after rain, bird flocks passing over — biomes gain daily rhythms.
- Interactions: feed, bucket (small aquatic species), and observe; several species tame or tolerate players who behave calmly.
- Drops and uses stay modest by design — the mod sells atmosphere first, resources second.
Pairs naturally with biome expansions (BOP, BWG, Regions Unexplored): their landscapes plus Naturalist's fauna produce the "nature documentary" Minecraft that screenshot threads love.
Naturalist FAQ
Are Naturalist animals dangerous?
Predators defend territory and hunt, but most telegraph aggression clearly (rattles, rearing, growls). Respecting warnings avoids nearly all deaths.
Does Naturalist affect performance?
Spawn rates are tuned and configurable; ambient species are lightweight. Large packs commonly run it alongside other mob mods without issue.
