What is The Aether?
The Aether is the legendary sky-dimension mod, first released in 2011 and now officially maintained for modern Forge, NeoForge, and Fabric by The Aether Team. Floating islands of Holystone and Skyroot hang over the void, home to flying pigs called Phygs, to rideable Moas, and to three tiers of dungeon bosses.
The modern releases stay faithful to the original while integrating cleanly with current packs: the portal and dungeons work as they always did, with the balance brought up to date.
Portal and Early Survival
- Build a glowstone frame shaped like a Nether portal, swapping the obsidian for glowstone.
- Pour a water bucket inside the frame to activate it.
- Step through with basics: falling off islands drops you back to the overworld from the void (bring a Cold Parachute or tame a Moa early).
Early-game notes:
- Skyroot and Holystone replace wood and stone tool lines; Zanite tools grow stronger as durability drops; Gravitite gear is the diamond tier with gravity tricks.
- Ambrosium Shards fuel furnaces and heal when eaten.
- Moas hatch from eggs and fly with multiple midair jumps by rarity — the dimension's signature mount.
- Watch for Cockatrices and aggressive Zephyrs; shields matter.
The Three Dungeons
- Bronze Dungeon (hidden in hills): fight the Slider, a stone cube boss vulnerable only to pickaxes. Rewards include dungeon keys and utility loot.
- Silver Dungeon (golden temples on tall islands): the Valkyrie Queen demands a fair one-on-one; earn a Victory Medal from Valkyries first.
- Gold Dungeon (massive golden fortress): the Sun Spirit ends the progression; defeating it unlocks sleeping in the Aether and the dimension's closing lore.
Dungeon loot includes iconic items: Gravitite gear, the Cloud Staff, Repulsion Shield, and Moa-related treasures. Treasure chests lock until the resident boss dies, so no cheese-looting.
The Aether FAQ
How do you get to the Aether?
Build a Nether-portal-shaped frame out of glowstone and activate it with a water bucket, then walk through.
What happens if you fall off the Aether islands?
Falling into the void below the Aether returns you to the overworld sky above your position rather than killing you. A parachute or Moa mount removes the fall-damage risk on arrival.
Is the Aether official on 1.21?
Yes, The Aether Team ships current builds for NeoForge and Fabric (Forge on earlier versions), covering 1.21.1 at the time of writing.
