What is Refined Storage?
Refined Storage is a digital storage mod by Refined Mods, available for Forge, NeoForge, and (since the Refined Storage 2 rewrite) Fabric. It stores items and fluids on disks inside a unified network that you access from a single searchable Grid, with autocrafting layered on top.
The mod uses a flat network model: every connected device works immediately, with no channel management. That makes it a popular first digital-storage system and a fixture of kitchen-sink modpacks. Quartz Enriched Iron, crafted from iron and nether quartz, is the only special material the mod asks for.
Getting Started with Your Network
- Craft Quartz Enriched Iron from iron ingots and nether quartz, then a Machine Casing.
- Place a Controller. It powers the whole network; feed it Forge Energy from any generator.
- Add a Disk Drive and a 1k Storage Disk. Disks come in 1k, 4k, 16k, and 64k item tiers (with fluid variants), and higher-tier storage parts are craftable upgrades.
- Attach a Grid or Crafting Grid. The Grid is your search-and-withdraw interface; the Crafting Grid adds a crafting matrix with JEI recipe transfer.
- Connect with Cable. Machines and devices link back to the Controller through standard cable runs.
That five-block setup replaces a chest room. Common next steps: an Importer on your furnace output, an Exporter feeding a machine, and an External Storage bus over a Storage Drawers wall so bulk items stay in cheap mass storage.
Autocrafting with Crafters
- Encode patterns in the Pattern Grid: crafting recipes for table crafts, processing patterns for machines (any input set, any output set).
- Place Crafters facing the machine that should receive ingredients, and load the patterns into them.
- Request items from the Grid; the network schedules the tree of sub-crafts automatically.
Chained Crafters handle multi-machine lines (ore to dust to ingot to gear), and the Detector plus Interface combination keeps buffers stocked. The Wireless Grid and Wireless Transmitter extend access anywhere in range, and a Security Manager locks down permissions on multiplayer builds.
Tip: Name your Crafters. Large builds accumulate dozens of them, and the autocrafting preview screen shows which named Crafter handles each step.
Refined Storage FAQ
Does Refined Storage work on Fabric?
Yes. Refined Storage 2, the rewrite used for Minecraft 1.21 and newer, publishes official Fabric builds in addition to Forge and NeoForge. Earlier versions were Forge only.
How is Refined Storage different from AE2?
Refined Storage has a flat network with no channels, so devices work as soon as they connect. AE2 adds channels, P2P tunnels, and deeper autocrafting infrastructure. Refined Storage reaches usable storage sooner; AE2 scales further for complex automation.
How do I add more storage space?
Add more or bigger disks (1k through 64k) to Disk Drives, craft Storage Blocks for fixed capacity, or point an External Storage bus at chests and drawer walls to fold existing inventories into the network.
